A clean paragraph cannot rescue a book that sets up questions, relationships, or stakes it never resolves.
Line editing is satisfying because the improvement is immediate: a sentence tightens, a verb becomes precise, a paragraph finally sounds like the book in your head. Structural revision is less comfortable because it asks whether the paragraph should exist at all.
Start with promises. Every mystery, goal, relationship, threat, and transformation teaches the reader to expect a later change or answer. List the promises the draft makes, then mark where each is set up, developed, and paid off. A promise may be intentionally unresolved, but it should never be forgotten by accident.
Next, test the scenes attached to those promises. What changes because the scene happened? If the emotional value, available information, relationship, or plan is identical at the end, the scene may be atmosphere rather than movement. Atmosphere can earn its place, but it should do so consciously.
Only then polish the language. Sentence work is most valuable after the book knows what it is keeping. Revision gets faster when you stop perfecting material the structure is about to remove.
