Publishing preflight guide

Catch common KDP rejection risks before upload

A KDP warning can come from the files, the listing, the rights declaration, or a mismatch between them. Diagnose the exact message first. Then correct the source file or field instead of repeatedly uploading a cosmetically different version.

01

Interior files fail at trim, margins, fonts, and content boundaries

Print interiors can be flagged when page size does not match the selected trim, content crosses safe margins, bleed is configured inconsistently, fonts are not embedded, or images and transparency create rendering problems. Very short or unusually long files may fall outside the supported range for the chosen format.

Ebooks have a different failure surface: navigation, chapter structure, unsupported markup, low-quality images, duplicated content, and display problems across reflowable devices. Validate the EPUB and inspect it in Kindle Previewer before uploading.

  • Trim, bleed, margin, page-count, font, image, and transparency issues
  • Cover dimensions, spine placement, safe areas, barcode space, and resolution
  • EPUB navigation, markup, links, image quality, and reflow problems
  • Metadata mismatches, prohibited claims, rights, and misleading content
02

Cover and metadata problems often reveal disagreement

The cover title, subtitle, author, and edition should match the listing and interior. A print cover built from an estimated spine can misplace panels after the interior count changes. Text too close to trim or folds may generate warnings even when it looked safe on the design canvas.

Metadata can be rejected or suppressed when it includes unsupported HTML, contact information, prices, rankings, unverifiable accolades, promotions, irrelevant keyword stuffing, or content that conflicts with the submitted book. Use Amazon's current policy wording when resolving a notice.

03

Build a repeatable preflight and keep the evidence

Novelbound checks manuscript-derived page geometry, spine and cover calculations, required listing fields, field limits, and common restricted patterns. It also produces EPUB and print-oriented outputs from the same book record so identity information is less likely to drift.

Save the exact rejection message, edition settings, uploaded file versions, validation reports, and screenshots from the previewer. If a corrected file still fails, that evidence makes KDP support more useful and prevents the team from changing unrelated parts of the book.

A practical workflow

Put the method into the manuscript

1

Classify the message

Identify whether the problem belongs to the interior, cover, ebook, metadata, rights, or content policy.

2

Return to the source

Fix the manuscript, layout, cover canvas, or listing field that generated the output.

3

Validate and preview

Run format checks and inspect every warning in KDP's current preview tools.

4

Resubmit one controlled revision

Keep file names and notes clear so you know exactly which correction Amazon reviewed.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

Why did KDP reject my book?

The exact notice matters. Common causes include file geometry, cover dimensions, ebook structure, metadata rules, rights questions, content policy, or disagreement between the submitted materials.

Does passing an EPUB validator guarantee KDP acceptance?

No. Technical validity is one layer. KDP also applies platform-specific rendering, metadata, quality, rights, and content checks.

Should I ignore a KDP preview warning if the page looks fine?

Investigate it against the current specification. A visual spot check can miss trim, font, image, or safe-area problems that affect manufacturing or another device.

Can Novelbound guarantee acceptance?

No service can approve a book for Amazon. Novelbound catches common, actionable risks before upload; KDP's current review and policy make the final decision.
