Paperback interior geometry

Choose a KDP gutter size from the finished page count

The gutter is the inside margin beside the binding. KDP's minimum grows as a paperback gains pages, but a readable novel may need more than the minimum. Calculate it only after trim size, typography, and a realistic page count agree.

01

Why page count controls the inside margin

A thicker book curves more deeply into the binding, so text needs more room on the inside edge. KDP publishes page-count bands with a minimum inside margin for each band. The current KDP table—not an old screenshot or remembered number—should control the production file you upload.

The inside margin is not the same as bleed. Bleed extends art beyond the trimmed edge; the gutter protects content near the binding. A no-bleed text interior still needs a gutter, and adding bleed does not replace it.

  • Confirm the final trim size and whether the interior uses bleed
  • Estimate pages from the actual text block, font, leading, and front matter
  • Use the current KDP minimum for that page-count band
  • Add design room when the minimum produces an uncomfortable text block
02

The calculation is circular until the layout settles

Page count changes the required gutter, but a larger gutter narrows the text block and can increase page count. If that increase crosses a KDP band, the required gutter changes again. A reliable formatter iterates until the page count and margins stop changing.

Novelbound estimates pages from trim and typography, applies a comfortable layout margin at or above the KDP minimum, and checks the resulting count again. The output remains a production estimate until the exported interior is rendered and inspected.

03

Verify the interior, not only the numbers

Inspect facing pages at normal reading size. Text should not look trapped in the crease, while outer margins should not make the block appear lopsided. Check chapter openers, long headings, tables, images, and any element that approaches the safe area.

Upload the finished file to KDP's previewer and review every flagged page. Amazon's current specifications and preview decision control acceptance; a calculator reduces preventable errors but cannot replace the platform's final check.

A practical workflow

Put the method into the manuscript

1

Lock trim and typography

Choose the page size, body font, font size, leading, and front matter before trusting page count.

2

Calculate a first count

Lay the manuscript into the real text block instead of dividing words by a generic number.

3

Apply the current KDP band

Set the inside margin at or above the minimum for the resulting page count and recalculate.

4

Render and preview

Inspect the PDF visually, then use KDP's previewer before approving the interior.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

Is the gutter the same as the inside margin?

In KDP's paperback guidance, the inside margin is commonly called the gutter. It is the space on the binding side of each page.

Why does KDP gutter size depend on page count?

More pages create a thicker book and a deeper curve near the binding, so content needs more protection from the crease.

Should I use only KDP's minimum margin?

The minimum is an acceptance boundary, not necessarily the most readable design. Many trade interiors use more room so the text block feels balanced and comfortable.

Does Novelbound calculate the gutter?

Novelbound estimates page count from the manuscript, trim, and typography, then applies an inside margin that meets or exceeds the relevant KDP minimum before checking the layout again.
