Mark the irreversible turns
Find the scenes that change the protagonist's available choices and story direction.
Story structure method
Save the Cat offers a detailed vocabulary for a story's opening promise, commitment, midpoint change, collapse, and resolution. It becomes most useful when each named beat points to manuscript evidence and the target percentages remain questions, not commandments.
The Opening Image and Theme Stated frame the initial condition. Setup, Catalyst, and Debate disturb it and force a response. Break into Two commits the protagonist to a new arena, while the B Story and Fun and Games develop the premise readers came to experience.
The Midpoint should alter pressure or understanding rather than merely divide the word count. Bad Guys Close In, All Is Lost, and Dark Night of the Soul strip away the earlier approach. Break into Three creates the final plan; Finale and Final Image prove what changed.
A beat name in an outline is not proof that the beat works. Attach the real scene or sequence and describe the irreversible change: what the protagonist decides, what new information changes the plan, or what consequence makes the earlier condition impossible.
Novelbound compares the target position of each selected beat with its position in the manuscript's actual word flow. A late catalyst or early midpoint becomes visible, but the software does not assume the difference is wrong.
If a beat falls outside the expected range, ask what the reader experiences during the delay or compression. A long setup may still build pressure; a rushed finale may deny consequences. Move, combine, strengthen, or relabel scenes based on story effect.
Save the Cat is a published method associated with its authors and rights holders; Novelbound is not affiliated with them. The app provides a compatible planning scaffold so writers who choose the method can connect it to their own work.
A practical workflow

Use the 15 labels to describe what each important scene is doing for the reader.
Measure the scene's word position against the framework's target as a diagnostic signal.
Revise pressure, decision, and aftermath before moving a scene simply to hit a number.
Questions, answered
They run from Opening Image through Theme Stated, Setup, Catalyst, Debate, Break into Two, B Story, Fun and Games, Midpoint, Bad Guys Close In, All Is Lost, Dark Night of the Soul, Break into Three, Finale, and Final Image.
No. Percentages are landmarks that reveal unusual compression or delay. The author decides whether the manuscript earns the effect.
Yes. Short novels and tightly designed scenes may perform several structural functions, while a major beat may also develop across a sequence.
Yes. Novelbound includes a 15-beat scaffold with target positions and lets you attach the beats to manuscript scenes for revision.
